What is Numerology?

History and cultural context

Numerological thinking appears across many ancient cultures — Pythagorean philosophy in ancient Greece assigned mystical significance to numbers, and similar systems developed in Kabbalistic Jewish tradition (Gematria) and in Chinese and Indian classical thought. Modern Western numerology as most people encounter it today draws heavily on the work of early-20th-century figures including L. Dow Balliett and later Florence Campbell, who systematized birth-path and name calculations into an accessible framework. It is practiced globally as a personal-growth and self-reflection tool with no single governing tradition.

How it works

A practitioner reduces the client's full birth date to a single Life Path number (and often several supporting numbers such as the Expression, Soul Urge, and Personal Year) using simple arithmetic. Name-based calculations use the traditional Pythagorean or Chaldean letter-to-number assignments. The practitioner then relates these numbers to their associated meanings — drive, communication style, recurring challenges, and timing — in dialogue with the client.
