Western astrology traces its roots to Mesopotamia and ancient Babylon, where sky-watchers began recording planetary cycles around 2000 BCE. Greek scholars — including Ptolemy, whose second-century CE text the Tetrabiblos shaped the tradition for over a millennium — wove Babylonian sky-lore together with Greek philosophy and the twelve-sign zodiac. The tradition flowed through Arabic scholarship, Renaissance Europe, and into the modern world; today it is practiced by professional astrologers and enthusiasts across every continent.
A practitioner begins with a birth chart — a circular map of the sky at the exact moment and place of birth — plotting the sun, moon, and planets across the twelve signs and twelve houses. They interpret the positions, the angles between planets (aspects), and the rising sign to build a picture of temperament, recurring themes, and significant life periods. Consultations are conversations: the astrologer presents patterns and the client reflects on where they resonate.
