Feng shui (literally "wind and water") developed in China over roughly two millennia, with roots in earlier practices of siting graves and buildings in alignment with natural landforms and cardinal directions. Classical schools — including Form School and Compass School — codified their methods during the Tang and Song dynasties (7th-13th centuries CE). Feng shui traveled with Chinese communities across Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and eventually to the West, where it became widely known in the late 20th century. Multiple lineages and schools exist today, ranging from traditional compass-based systems to contemporary interior-design adaptations.
