A broad family of mind-training and contemplative practices — drawn from Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, Christian, secular, and other traditions — that cultivate present-moment awareness, calm, and clarity.
Formal meditation practices appear across many of the world's spiritual traditions: in the dhyana of the Vedic and Buddhist traditions of the Indian subcontinent (with roots going back 2,500 or more years), in the contemplative prayer practices of Christian monasticism, in Sufi dhikr, and in Daoist zuowang ("sitting in forgetfulness"). Modern secular mindfulness emerged largely from the Insight Meditation movement of the 1970s, which brought Theravada Buddhist vipassana techniques to Western audiences; Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, launched in 1979, established a clinically-researched secular form that has spread worldwide. Today meditation is practiced in standalone apps, studios, hospitals, schools, and corporate wellness programs — as well as within traditional monastic and community settings.
Practices vary widely: breath-focused attention (such as anapanasati or simple mindfulness of breathing), body-scan relaxation, loving-kindness (metta) cultivation, guided visualization, mantra repetition, or open awareness. Most forms begin with settling the body and directing attention to a chosen anchor — the breath, a word, a sound — and gently returning to it when the mind wanders. Sessions can last from a few minutes to several hours.
