Curanderismo developed through centuries of encounter between Indigenous Mesoamerican healing traditions and Spanish colonial-era Catholicism — a mestizo synthesis that varies significantly by region, community, and family lineage. Curanderos and curanderas have served their communities as healers, midwives, spiritual counselors, and social mediators, often operating outside or alongside formal medicine. The tradition is not a single unified system; regional variants include the Yucatec Maya tradition, Tejano border curanderismo, and healing practices from Oaxacan and other Indigenous communities.
