A modern Pagan religion centered on reverence for nature, the turning of the seasonal wheel, and ritual practice honoring a Goddess and God — developed in 20th-century Britain and now practiced globally.
Wicca was introduced publicly in England in the early 1950s by Gerald Gardner, who drew on ceremonial magic traditions, folklore, and his own initiatory experiences to present it as a revival of pre-Christian witchcraft. Doreen Valiente worked closely with Gardner to shape much of Wicca's foundational liturgy, including the Charge of the Goddess. The tradition diversified rapidly through the latter 20th century — Alexandrian Wicca, Dianic Wicca, and numerous eclectic and solitary paths developed alongside the original Gardnerian lineage — and today Wicca is practiced by individuals and covens across North America, Europe, Australia, and beyond.
Practice centers on observing the eight sabbats of the Wheel of the Year (solstices, equinoxes, and the cross-quarter days) and the lunar esbats (full and new moon gatherings). Ritual typically involves casting a circle, calling the quarters, honoring the Goddess and God, raising and directing energy through visualization or chant, and closing the circle. Spellwork, herbalism, divination, and ancestor veneration are often woven into personal and group practice. Wicca on Healogy is presented as a spiritual and nature-based path.
