A classical Chinese astrological system that derives a person's chart from the year, month, day, and hour of birth — each a "pillar" — to explore personality, relationships, and life timing.
BaZi (Eight Characters) developed within the broader framework of Chinese cosmological thought during the Tang and Song dynasties, drawing on the ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches — elements of the traditional Chinese calendar that pair cyclic symbols to encode time. The method was refined by scholars such as Xu Ziping in the Song dynasty (960-1279 CE), whose approach of centering analysis on the Day Stem remains foundational today. BaZi is widely practiced across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, and has a growing practitioner community in the West.
A practitioner constructs the four-pillar chart from the birth date and time, identifying the ten-year luck pillars and annual influences that interact with the natal chart over a lifetime. They assess the balance and flow of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) within the chart and read the patterns of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches to describe temperament, relational dynamics, and periods of challenge or opportunity. Readings are presented as a map of tendencies and timing, not fixed predictions, and Healogy hosts BaZi as a reflective cultural tradition.
