A Japanese system of herbal medicine derived from classical Chinese medicine, formally integrated into the Japanese healthcare system and practiced by licensed physicians and pharmacists alongside conventional treatment.
Kampo (literally "the method of Han China") arrived in Japan via Korea around the 5th and 6th centuries CE, carrying with it classical Chinese medical texts including the Shang Han Lun. Japanese physicians adapted and refined these formulas over subsequent centuries, developing a distinctly Japanese approach characterized by fixed classical formulas, abdominal palpation (fukushin) as a key diagnostic tool, and close clinical observation. During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Western medicine was mandated as the official medical system and Kampo was suppressed; it was revived in the mid-20th century and today more than 148 Kampo formulas are covered by Japan's national health insurance. Kampo is practiced by licensed medical doctors in Japan and is increasingly studied in international research settings.
A Kampo practitioner — typically a licensed physician or pharmacist in Japan — takes a detailed history and conducts a physical examination that includes abdominal palpation and pulse assessment to identify the patient's sho (the constitutional and symptomatic pattern that determines formula selection). A classical multi-herb formula (kanpo-yaku) is prescribed from a standardized set and prepared as granules, decoctions, or tablets. Healogy presents Kampo as an educational resource; for Kampo treatment, consult a licensed practitioner or physician in your jurisdiction (see Medical Disclaimer).
