A traditional Indonesian system of herbal wellness — blending Javanese, Balinese, and other archipelago traditions — using hand-crafted plant-based preparations to support everyday health and vitality.
Jamu is one of the oldest health traditions in Southeast Asia, with written references in Javanese court texts from the 12th century CE and roots in an oral tradition much older still. It developed across the Indonesian archipelago as each island and ethnic community — Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Madurese, and others — cultivated its own plant knowledge and formulas. Jamu became widely accessible through the iconic jamu gendong (women who carry and sell freshly prepared jamu on their backs), a tradition that continues in Javanese cities today. Indonesia's Ministry of Health maintains an official list of traditional herbal preparations (Obat Herbal Terstandar and Fitofarmaka) and Jamu is experiencing renewed global interest alongside broader attention to Indonesian wellness traditions.
Traditional Jamu preparations are hand-made from fresh roots, bark, leaves, and spices — most commonly turmeric, ginger, galangal, tamarind, and bitter melon — pounded or blended and strained into a drink. Formulas are matched to the person's condition and constitution: some preparations are taken daily for general wellbeing, others are specific to digestion, energy, postpartum recovery, or skin health. Healogy presents Jamu as an educational and cultural tradition; for any health concern, consult a licensed healthcare provider in your jurisdiction (see Medical Disclaimer).
