This tradition may include wellness or spiritual guidance. Healogy.ai does not provide medical diagnosis or treatment.
A living tradition of healing practiced across Mexico, Central America, and Latino communities worldwide, combining Indigenous plant knowledge, Catholic folk spirituality, and community-centered care.
Curanderismo developed through centuries of encounter between Indigenous Mesoamerican healing traditions and Spanish colonial-era Catholicism — a mestizo synthesis that varies significantly by region, community, and family lineage. Curanderos and curanderas have served their communities as healers, midwives, spiritual counselors, and social mediators, often operating outside or alongside formal medicine. The tradition is not a single unified system; regional variants include the Yucatec Maya tradition, Tejano border curanderismo, and healing practices from Oaxacan and other Indigenous communities. Curanderismo continues to be practiced actively in Mexico, the United States Southwest, and wherever Mexican and Central American communities have settled.
A curandero or curandera conducts an intake that attends to the spiritual, emotional, social, and physical dimensions of a person's situation — conditions such as susto (fright sickness), mal de ojo (evil eye), and envidia (envy) are understood as relational and spiritual as well as bodily. Healing may involve limpia (spiritual cleansing) using eggs, herbs, smoke, or prayer; the preparation of herbal teas, poultices, or baths; and ritual prayer drawing on Catholic saints and Indigenous spiritual figures. Healogy presents Curanderismo with respect for its community roots and cultural specificity; it is not a substitute for medical care, and seekers are encouraged to engage with practitioners within their own cultural community where possible.
