A classical Indian system of astrology — known as Jyotisha — that uses the sidereal zodiac and an intricate system of planetary periods to explore personality, life-path, and timing.
Jyotisha (Sanskrit: "the science of light") is one of the six Vedangas, the auxiliary disciplines attached to the Vedas, and is considered among the oldest continuously-practiced astrological traditions in the world. Its foundational texts, including the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, are dated by scholars to roughly the first millennium CE but draw on an oral tradition stretching back further. Practiced within Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist communities across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the diaspora, Vedic astrology remains deeply integrated into cultural life — consulted at births, betrothals, business beginnings, and auspicious timing.
A Jyotishi (practitioner) calculates a birth chart using the sidereal zodiac — aligned to fixed star positions — rather than the tropical (seasonal) zodiac used in Western astrology. They assess the placement of nine celestial bodies (the navagrahas), the twenty-seven lunar mansions (nakshatras), and the person's current planetary period (dasha) to describe themes unfolding across different life phases. Readings are often framed within a dharmic worldview and may include guidance on auspicious timing (muhurta) or remedial measures (upayas) such as gemstones, mantra, or charitable acts. Healogy presents Jyotisha as a reflective cultural tradition; it is not medical or legal advice.
