A Yoruba spiritual and divinatory tradition originating in West Africa, in which trained priests (babalawos and iyanifas) consult the Ifá corpus to offer guidance on life decisions, relationships, and ceremonial matters.
Ifá is a sacred tradition of the Yoruba people of present-day Nigeria, Benin, and Togo, with a continuous lineage stretching back many centuries. Through the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the resilience of African diaspora communities, Ifá and related Orisha traditions took root in Cuba (Lucumí / Santería), Brazil (Candomblé), Trinidad, and the United States. UNESCO inscribed the Ifá divination system on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. Ifá remains a living tradition with formally initiated priests in West Africa and across the diaspora.
Ifá divination is performed by an initiated babalawo or iyanifá using either the opele divining chain or sacred palm nuts (ikin) on a divining tray (opon Ifá). The pattern that appears corresponds to one of 256 odu — sacred verses from the Ifá corpus — which the priest interprets in dialogue with the seeker, often recommending specific ebo (offerings) or actions. Healogy presents Ifá with respect for its initiatory and ceremonial nature; we encourage seekers interested in deeper engagement to connect with formally trained practitioners within the tradition's living lineages.
